This is one of PeeJay’s stops. Very peaceful next to an open grassy park. Lots of people enjoying the evening and the sunset. After dark it became very quiet and we had a good night. There is a shower on the beach and also a dilapidated toilet which was useful for emptying the cassette.

Just outside town at the foot of the hill to the Acropolis, near the Red Basilica, is a large dirt area where trucks and Dolmus park. We did not stay here but think it would make a decent place to stay. No facilities but close to town.

Very pleasant shaded car park of the local “relaxing place” called Ilicaksu Turkuaz (Turquoise Spring). They have two pools and sell live carp for eating of course. The owner is Yücel Tutus and he speaks excellent English. He and his staff were very welcoming and allowed us to stay in the car park, with security guard. The nearby road was busy until around midnight and then we had a good night’s sleep.

Pamukkale Camp Manzara, Turkey

This is really the garden of the Manzara restaurant. Entrance down the side road. They wanted €20 a night but we said we would pay in TL. That became 40TL. In other words around £14. We had electricity, use of the pool and internet. The outside toilets are not wonderful, but we used the ones in the restaurant. Very convenient for the ancient site of Hieropolis and the great mass of white calcium travertines. Staff friendly and helpful.

It is not really a campsite and "camping" is in the car park on the wooded shore of the man made lake. We even parked under a man made shade. There is a toilet nearby that can be useful. The car park is for the museum of Hittite history and is worth visiting. During the day it was very busy with organised (and disorganised) school outings. But at night it was very peaceful.

N 37° 18.844'
E 40° 44.640'
The owner at Camping Kommagene in Kahta suggested we stay at this place run by a good friend of his. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and is situated in the centre of the old district of Mardin. The photo does not do this justice because of the roadworks. Fantastic views over Syria from the roof terrace. The staff, including, Sarif, Muhamed and Abdulrahkman were kind, generous and friendly. We were allowed to drink on the rooftop terrace with fantastic views over Syria and we enjoyed showers and breakfasts in the hotel. We stayed 3 nights a) because the area is so interesting and b) the council were relaying the cobbled street. To get to the car park you must drive on the main street through the old town. This is not for the faint hearted on Friday evening. At other times it’s not too bad. If we return to Mardin we will come here. We were allowed use of toilets and showers and whatever we needed. What lovely people! Look at their website.

Two meters from the shore of Lake Van with shade. There are toilets and clean showers. This place is really a picnic stop and people were dropping in all day for kebaps and a chat. However the area is being prepared for motorhomes and looks promising for the future. The owner, Ragip Erdem, is very kind and helpful. He even went home to get an extension lead so we can have electricity. Sadly, the internet was broken by someone the day before we arrived.

Hasankeyf Hasbace Camping, Turkey
N 37° 42.889'
E 41° 24.941'
We had heard about this place and how nice it was. Sadly it has gone downhill. The toilets were disgusting and the shower room was full of old carpets, junk and a rat. The camping area was about the size of half a tennis court and was far from flat. In fact we had to park over a massive deep puddle from a broken water course. Electricity was from a socket on a tree at the opposite side of the car park so every car that visited drove over it. Do not come here expecting a lovely situation. Sad, but true.

Just a couple of kilometers North of Tunceli is a picnic place down by the river, on the right. It’s a large area with lots of trees for shade. We asked the man at the small cafe if we could stay the night. He said we could and he went to a lot of trouble to make sure we were OK. He opened a gate and we parked in a larger restaurant area, gate closed behind us. It’s a lovely spot next to the river with cliffs opposite. Very peaceful.

Erzincan Shell Station NS, Turkey

The Shell station is very new and is about 7 kilometers East on the main road from Erzincan. We’d passed it on the way to Erzincan! We spent a long time trying to find a campsite in the area, with no success. This place is clean and tidy, flat concrete, clean toilets at restaurant. Reasonably priced kebaps. Much quieter than we expected. The worst noise was from the lawn sprinklers.

While following the road North from Macka we were given a card by a passing pick-up truck for a campsite. We followed them for a mile or two and then they started down a very rough dirt track. As the picture on the card only showed cars with roof tents we turned back and went to the small but very well maintained area next to a quality, clean, restaurant. We were welcomed with cay. In fact every cay was free from then on. We parked on grass next to clean low-type toilets and shower. Electricity and wifi available. Best signal next to restaurant. Staff very helpful and friendly. Only a few kilometers from the wonderful Sumela Monastery. Cost 35TL per night.

Between the sea and the busy coast road, but that’s where they all seem to be. We passed 2 or 3 possible campsites West of Unye but this seemed the best. It’s really a picnic place and a place for fixed tents. There’s a restaurant, electricity and the toilets are very clean. The internet was “broken” when we visited.
The area was lit at night and it’s reasonably quiet. Lots of shade trees. There is really only room for 4 or 5 motorhomes. We were the only one so no problem.

Orman Evleri Piknik Yeri. This is a picnic area in the National Park along side the road around the dam. To be honest we felt that if we had not asked the price we would not have been charged 25TL... but what the hell. Not many level areas. There are toilets but not safe to visit! There is free water and electricity if you ask the warden, who speaks no English. About a dozen people in the picnic area having a barbecue. At night you are alone in the forest. About 30 K from Tokat.

As you approach the town from the South you climb a hill. Just over the crest of the hill is what looks like a bus station on the left. Much better than driving into the town though, it’s very tight in places.

Basically it is a grassy field with fixed tents between a wooded hill and the road. But it’s shady and has showers, toilets, electricity and wifi. The man in charge was friendly and agreed a price of 30TL, unlike the man at Green Park campsite who wanted 50TL. He even wanted 50TL from two German cyclists with the smallest tents you’ve ever seen. Incidentally the wifi connection is good and stable. But the toilets and cold showers are simply behind canvas screens. The ladies has a high and low type toilet. The men have to squat if they don't have a motorhome loo.

The Aire, Kennedy Caddesi, Istanbul, Turkey
N 41° 0.093'
E 28° 58.646'
For location this place cannot be beaten. You are within a few hundred meters of all the major sites of Istanbul. Other than that the place is just a car park. Park next to the trees as they provide excellent shade in late afternoon, evening. There is a sort of toilet cabin. Abandon hope all who enter. There may be water but it’s from the pipe that is used to wash out the toilet! There are crowds of people thronging around, people selling anything from dried pretzels to raw mussels. It sounds bad, but it isn’t. Everyone is friendly and the atmosphere is wonderful. Cost 30TL a night. We left in the afternoon of the third day and were charged only 45TL for two and three quarter days. We didn’t understand why.
Incidentally the Aire at the Sports Centre costs 50TL a day and is said to have showers, etc. But we were also told that the area is full of drunks. In addition there is absolutely no shade. You must turn off 200 meters before the Sports Center to access that site. By the time you realise this, you have gone past. On our second and third days the Sports Centre was empty while we had eight MHs in the Aire.

To be honest this is not much of a campsite. There is no shade and the ground is railway track ballast. There does not apperar to be anything to do in the area other than watch the aircraft landing at Ataturk Airport. Thankfully it’s not noisy. The campsite seems to be an overflow car park for the main business which is car washing. The pressure washers can be heard until 20-00 hours. The toilets are not too bad but are shared with the car cleaning people.

This campsite is in a lovely rural setting. But it is well off the beaten track. The grounds are all grass and immaculately maintained. Facilities: clean toilets, showers, electricity but no wifi. Our recommendation for visiting Istanbul is to go to the Aire/car park on Kennedy Caddesi. This place is too far out of the city and even the next village is a taxi ride away. And a top class site like this should have internet.
